The Bible talks about a man who waited on the Lord. His name is Jacob. This man first waited on his father. Therefore, he did not worry about things concerning the God. Later on, he depended on his mother and lived under her shadow. Then, he came to his father to receive his blessings. His father was a man who walked with God and talked with Him. Therefore, when the time came, Jacob waited on his father to receive his blessings. Now Isaac told his older son, “Make some savory food such as I love and bring it to me that I may eat and bless you before I die” But, Jacob wanted to deceive his brother and receive his father’s blessings. At the same time, he feared that his father might find out the truth and cursehim. But, his love for his father overcame his fear. So, he ran to his father and fulfilled his desire. Because he gave more importance to the blessing of his father, he received it also. His father’s blessings came to him. The Bible says that he received three kinds of worldly blessings.
“Surely, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed. Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be every one who curses you and blessed be those who bless you” (Genesis 27: 27-29).
All these blessings given by Jacob’s father to him are only to lead a prosperous worldly life! But, then the circumstances forced him to leave his father and to find refuge under his uncle. There, the Lord fulfilled the blessings that were given to him by his father. God blessed him with wives, children, wealth, name, fame and made him very prosperous.
When the time came, this man who had been under the shadow of his father, mother and uncle at different times, had to leave this place also. At this time, his heart trembled and fear gripped him because his uncle and his sons turned against him. Further, his fear increased when he heard, “Your own brother is coming to meet you” He knew that his older brother would kill him the moment he saw him because he has already made public his anger against him for deceiving him and his intention to kill him. Only at this hopeless situation that Jacob waited on the Lord for His help. The wealth of his uncle brought him prosperity but yet in this hopeless situation only, he had to wait on the Lord all alone. When he heard his older brother was coming to meet him on the following day, he waited at the Lord all through the night in prayers seeking the deliverance of the Lord (Hosea 12:4). Yes! The Lord heard his prayers and delivered him!
Dear Friend! From today onwards, the same thing is going to happen in your life also. When the Lord comes to you, you will see Him wrestling more with you than your wrestling with Him! Yes! Jacob was left alone and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip and his hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. So, He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob but Israel for you have struggled with God and men and have prevailed” (Genesis 32:27, 28).
The above verses do not say that Jacob wrestled against God but it is God Himself who came down from heaven and wrestled against Jacob. Yes! It will be like this only! When we wait on the Lord, He will come down and wrestle against us!
